Easygel media are rapid methods for the detection of bacteria, mold and yeast.  Read on to find out more.

Coliform

Chromogenic medium for the detection of coliforms.  Colonies are formed and will color a teal / green color.  The detection is very accurate as it is based on the production of galactosidase by the coliform colony.  Uses standard methodology, and incubation time around 24-48 hours at optimum temperature, 35° C.

Coliscan®

Chromogenic medium for the detection and differentiation of E. coli from other coliforms.  Coliscan is a clear medium containing two chromogenic substrates.  One is cleaved by the enzyme galactosidase (produced almost exclusively by coliforms) to produce an insoluble pink compound.  This causes coliform colonies to become pink/red.  The second is cleaved by the enzyme glucuronidase (produced almost exclusively by E. coli) to produce an insoluble teal compound.  Using the two compounds allows easy visual distinction between general coliforms (pink/red colonies) and E. coli (pink + teal = blue/purple colonies).

ECA Check®

Chromogenic medium for the detection and differentiation of E. coli from other coliforms.  ECA Check® is a clear medium containing a chromogenic substrate mixture.  Enzymes specific to each of the four bacterial groups react with their specific chromogenic substrates to produce the colors that differentiate each bacterial type.

Orange Serum

Orange Serum is used to detect acid-tolerant, putrifactive microorganisms, in particular lactobacilli.  Other microorganisms tend to be inhibited by the low pH.  It is used mainly for fruit juices and fruit juice concentrates –
especially juices from citrus fruits.  There may be some settling of particulate material, but this is the normal ingredient, and will in no way interfere with the results.  Simply invert the bottles of liquid medium several times to re-suspend particles shortly before uncapping.

Potato Dextrose

Potato Dextrose promotes the growth of yeasts and molds, while the low pH inhibits the growth of bacterial flora. It is used to isolate and cultivate yeasts and molds in dairy and food products.

Total Count

Total Count provides an excellent nutrient base for general growth.  This medium is used to determine total microbial count, without differentiation of microbial types.  AOAC approved.

Total Count T-Salt

Total Count provides an excellent nutrient base for general growth. This medium is used to determine total microbial count, without differentiation of microbial types. All bacterial colonies wil be a red color, due to the reduction of the T-salt by the colonies. The red color makes counting easier for inexperienced users or when samples are very high in particulates.  AOAC approved.

Violet Red Bile

VRB is AOAC approved for the detection of coliform bacteria in dairy products. It is also used for direct count of coliform bacteria in water.  This medium is particularly useful to control the pasteurization process of milk. It is possible to determine coliform counts at any stage of the
process, thus evaluating the cleanliness of each piece of equipment, as well as finding sources of contamination. This medium promotes growth
of E. coli, Enterobacter, Salmonella and inhibits growth of Gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus.
