Description
Selective For: Lactic acid bacteria
Description:
Orange Serum is used to detect acid-tolerant, putrifactive microorganisms, in particular lactobacilli. Other microorganisms tend to be inhibited by the low pH. It is used mainly for fruit juices and fruit juice concentrates – especially juices from citrus fruits. There may be some settling of particulate material, but this is the normal ingredient, and will in no way interfere with the results. Simply invert the bottles of liquid medium several times to re-suspend particles shortly before uncapping.
Composition: Peptone, yeast extract, orange extract, glucose and dipotassium phosphate. pH 5.5
Procedure: Standard methodology. The dishes should be incubated at 30-32°C up to 3 days. If the presence of fungi is suspected, incubate up to 5 days.
Interpretation: Strains that grow on Orange Serum include Bacillus cereus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus casei, Leuconostoc mesenteroides, and Candida albicans
Storage: Room temperature.
Shelf Life: 1 year
